First to those who don’t know who / what is EDMW, it is the acronym of “Eat-Drink-Man-Woman”. EDMW is a sub forum in Hardwarezone, Singapore’s famous hardware portal. It is a forum whereby daily and general discussions are posted and usually has some controversial topics involved in their discussion. Listing a few, the discussion of the Mas Selamat escape and the discussion of the recent news about the China NTU student who was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Of course with such controversial thinkings and speech, there’s bound to be some heated discussions. Lets take the China NTU Student news for example. The topic involved was whether they should donate to the victim involved. There’s been various different comments about that and here are some of the comments in the discussion thread. (some words are edited to show their original meaning like lich -> rich)
satayxp: “so many prc in Sg.. ask them to donate lah, no nid to ask singaporean, if every prc jus donate 1 cent to him, he rich liao, so will his own countrymen donate??”
shawntyg: “he just come here to study use as a “stepping stone”, after that go back.”
fisheye: “i’m not saying let him die, but just bloody send him back to his country n they’ll help him
if the government needs such a talent so damn badly, pay for him out of their own pockets, not raising this n that n making us pay for him in the end”
guanfatt: “we help them, then will they help us when we need help? Have u ever seen them donating to our causes? Seriously, i have seen none.”
Above are just random picks from the first few pages, I’m too lazy to scroll all the way to the back. Back to the point, I’m not saying that Singaporeans are not Sympathetic towards cases like this, but lets think about it this way. At least these are the heartfelt comments of some people. Do you see / hear comments like this on TV? Do you hear them on any other media apart from the Internet.
This is why it’s always wise to get information from more then 1 media source, rather then relying on 1 source. It gives us a better picture of what is happening and how people involve are really feeling. Of course it is up to ourself to decide which on these are true comments and which are just nonsensical shit.
Of course I’m not saying that EDMW is representing the majority of Singaporeans and in no way that that is true, but It is an alternative source where controversial comments are heard / seen. As I said, its up to us to filter and decide the level of truth behind all these comments. Its just another source.
And of course SPH is having one hell of a time frying all these news, and ever since they took over HardWareZone forums, their quotes are “free-of-charge” and more and more often you will see quotes and comments coming out from their forums, usually from sub forum EDMW.
So think about it, are they unsympathetic Singaporeans, or are they “dare-to-say-dare-to-comment” Singaporeans. Then ask yourself next, if you were ask to donate, will you donate? There’s no one to lie to, there’s no media to fake to, ask yourself.
