For the last 1 week starting from Monday, I have been working part time as a “Flyer Person” or aka “Promoter”. I work for the company Singapore Post aka SingPost, and in a joint venture with Prudential. It is something like promoting for the Saving Premium by Singpost and Prudential.
Job Scope
The job scope that we were told was just to give out flyers. But then the time we were there, we are the ones responsible to go earlier to setup the booth, and stay back late to wrap up the booth. FYI, there were only 2 of us, me and Jonathan. Basically our responsibilities included setting and unsetting the booth everyday, giving out flyers, taking photos for people who want to join the free photo contest (not many people joined) and when we have nothing to do, we can just give out balloons.
Physical
Physically wise, the job requires us to stand at least 10 hours around the same small area, giving out flyers. At first, I thought it would be tiring, but I never knew it was that tiring. After the first day, my knees were quite sore but after a night’s rest, they were back to normal. However, by the 2nd night, my knees were hurting, my leg bones were in tremendous pain (imagine blue black pain, just 5 times more pain and hurts throughout).
By the 3rd night, 2 visible red lines trail from my knees to my foot, the path of the bones. I did nothing, just standing, and the pain was unbearable. My lower back was so sore from standing that I couldn’t bend without feeling the pain.
However, maybe my body got used to the torture, from the 4th and 5th night onwards, there was little or no more pain on the legs. The sore back was still there though. This job is definitely not for the weak.
Salary
The pay is alright. 6.50 per hour, and anything after 44 hours in manpower law are O.T pay, so basically, day 1-4 normal pay, day 5 and 6 is O.T 1.5 pay, and sunday is 2x pay. I’ve calculated and this 1 week I would probably be getting 500+ without CPF deduction yet.
Job Enjoyment
The job enjoyment level was quite low at first, because the first 3 days, everyone didn’t talk to us at all. Maybe because everyday, 4 different teams take shift on different days. So the people we saw were different alternatively. The managers looked quite strict too and so we didn’t even slack for the first 2 3 days. From the 4th day onwards, we started to realized that at times, the prudential staff were so slack including the manager. We even talked to a few staff and the manager, and joke around at times.
Slowly we began to try and find time off, because basically our job has no overseeing supervisor. We had our own breaks (own time own target). So soon we took longer and longer breaks, or going for walks around Bugis during work time.
Offtopic: Omg I dropped by Epicentre today and I saw the Malware Protection Kit for the MacBook Pro. I’m so tempted to get 1 set for my Mac, but when I titled and saw the price, I felt the stump in my throat. 59 dollars
. Why is it so expensive!
Although my work did cash me in some money but I’m saving it for rainy days and for a new portable HDD. I guess the Malware protection pack would have to wait.
So the enjoyment rate, although not very high due to the nature of the work, it was bearable for the last few days. We did a lot of crap stuff too.
Customer Profile
By customer, I mean the people we are giving our flyers to. In this case, everyone that walks past. From this line of work, I have seen more ugly Singaporeans. Not by appearance, but by their manners. I looked at them, gave a small smile and gave them the flyer, the least they could do was to respond. I never expected everyone to take, since I don’t take these flyers unless I am interested too. But I don’t look at the flyer giver, then walk on, acting that the person is not that.
So many, so many, lousy shit aunties, acting all high class at bugis. They think that they are rich by wearing high heels, donning those super old fashion but expensive bags and with a too rich to stop attitude. They can just look infront and continue walking, not bothering to say no, shake their head or even wave their hand. The least I see people doing was to give a smile, or nod their head, acknowledging that they saw us, in a way saying “no thank you.”
I appreciate those people who did so and I really thank them for being good mannered Singaporeans / Humans.
Overall
The job was ok, but I’m very glad that it is over. I can finally rest and wait for the pay to come before getting my portable Hard Disk Drive. We got to play with kids, see balloon sculpting, look at pretty sight, it wasn’t that bad for the last few days. If I was to get another offer like this, I might take it up if it wasn’t for a week. 3 days is the max I guess.
For now, I just want to rest, play my game and learn some new stuff for school.
Tata! End of post!
